Post #6: The Value of Variety

Based on my experiences in Iraq as a Marine and Afghanistan as a contractor, I must say that these are two bleak countries. I know there is natural beauty to be found but it seems to be rare. However, one of the advantages of having nothing is that when you get something, it feels that much better.

I’ve always maintained that a hot shower after a long stint in the field is one of the best things on Earth. So is the feeling of clean socks, a good dump on your own toilet, and your first beer of the night. The richest men alive can’t buy that. There are certain things that are unique to the military life. Most of these things suck. Some are so amazing that they convince your hand to sign reenlistment papers.

The following pictures aren’t that impressive without context. They’re not that great with context either but I hope they get the point across that sometimes it’s the little things that keep you going.

Some green trees along a street on Hurricane Point. Some red and black carpets outside of a shop along Route Michigan.
